Housing Authority recognized for programs
The Portsmouth Redevelopment and Housing Authority received three national awards for a new safety program, its Phoebus Square project and the Westbury community.
The three awards of merit came from the National Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials.
In the safety program, the housing authority is trying to decrease crime through resident outreach, a formal trespass policy, street privatization and environmental changes such as better lighting and tree removal. The authority has seen a decrease in loitering and criminal activity in the Dale Homes and Lincoln Park communities since the program fully started in June 2009, said Kathy Warren, the authority’s deputy executive director.
Phoebus Square offers 122 units for the elderly in downtown and was part of the authority’s 2005 HOPE VI Revitalization Program. Westbury offers affordable homes to first-time home buyers with incomes at or below 80 percent of the area median level.
The housing authority is now in the running for a more competitive distinction – an Award of Excellence – for those projects later this year, Warren said.
